Like, Like, Like.

Let me paint you a picture :

Miss X is sitting in her living room having just written a blog post. She already has around 2,000 followers, but she wants more. She stumbles upon new blogs, and goes on a ‘liking’ spree. Mind you, she doesn’t read a single word, only ‘likes’ the posts, maybe 10 or 20 of them. How much time does it take? Two minutes at the max.

Miss Y is a new blogger. She just joined WordPress a month ago and has been consistently posting every day. She’s got a collection of 30 posts. She opens her WordPress app and finds that Miss X has liked most of her posts. She is thrilled. ‘Wow! Miss X with 2000 followers has liked my posts. Considering her following, she really knows a lot about content. That means she supports me. I’m going to follow her.’

And that my friend is how manipulative Miss X gets more and more followers, and more and more ‘likes’.

It gets on my nerves when other bloggers go on liking sprees. Especially when they like more than 5 posts at a time.

It irritates me for two reasons :

1) He/she is blindly liking my posts, without reading them. How do I know? Because they can’t be superman/superwoman and read ten posts in two minutes.

2) There is no option to select all notifications and ‘mark as read’. So I have to individually tap each notification in order to make it disappear. First world problems, I tell you.

My solution?

I’m far too kind and sometimes a little petty too. So what I usually do is I go and ‘like’ five or ten of their posts as well. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

But I don’t follow them, because they don’t follow me. I have always believed in mutual support, and if you don’t feel like supporting me by following my blog, then why should I? (Unless your blog is super awesome, your content is mind-blowing and it doesn’t matter to me if you don’t follow me back.)

P. S. In the past, there were times when I have gone on liking sprees to show support to bloggers whose posts I read often. But that’s only when I was too lazy/bored to read.

But I stopped doing that, I am a changed person now. Hence this lovely post. Haha.

More irritating habits will be revealed in future posts. Stay tuned!

Thank you for reading! Stay blessed!

  1. Omg this is EXACTLY what I was angry about… It did irritate when ppl kept on “liking”. And worse they comment something irrelevant! It’s just wierd and secretly nice I got to notice them. I thought of writing something like this too, and here you are!

    1. Hahaha high-five! I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets irritated with such things! 😁
Irrelevant comments, that’s exactly what my next irritating habit post is about! πŸ˜‚

      1. I’m really really glad! πŸ˜‚ I’ve had it as my rule since the beginning to not like any post without reading. Afterall we’re all bloggers, we write our mind out, and it’s so disrespectful!!

        1. Very true. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’› Having even a small group of true followers who read what we write, is much better than a million ‘likes’. 😁

    1. Hahahaha so notifications matter for you. πŸ˜‚
But then they should give an option to ‘mark all as read’. That would save so much time for us, you know. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜œ

      1. Haha, no no, i mean i write, schedule and forget about the post. I just read on WordPress app. For me only the comments matter which criticise and provide me with more insights about my posts.

          1. I really don’t care about “Likes”. This platform is something that has got some productive use case as compared to other platforms. And I’m glad that you wrote this post.

            1. That’s true. But I find that people ‘like’ posts on WordPress similar to how they liked my motivational posts on Instagram, they just ‘like’ it. Very few actually read.

              1. That’s quite common, maybe because they try to prove that they’re actually reading but they forget that they are fooling themselves on the way of doing so. They are missing insights.

  2. Very True! Blogging has lost its honesty. People just follow you for a follow back. They like your post so that you like theirs. And to top all of that, some people just leave a “great post” comment on your blog so that you do the same. People are active here, not to interact, but to increase the engagement on their blog. I really regard the people who genuinely read your post and leave an honest comment. Gladly, there are quite a few of them and their presence is the reason that blogging hasn’t lost its spark yet.😊

    1. Well said, Gauri. I completely agree. ☺️
And don’t forget about the drama here, gosh! Don’t people have real life commitments or not? πŸ˜‚

      1. Goodness! Finally. Someone who understands the struggle.πŸ˜ƒ I agree. The drama here is so unnecessary. I mean, why would you do that? Why start fights which have no significant grounds? The first time I was (forcefully) pulled into such a drama, I was so disgusted by the idea. I just started blogging back then and wasn’t really interacting much (let’s talk about being an introvert) and that person concluded that I was arrogant and considered myself a celebrity. The concerned person actually wrote five mean posts about it. That was so frightening in the beginning and I am still paranoid if I am being rude in my responses πŸ˜“

        1. Woah! That was totally unnecessary of the person to upload mean posts about you, and that too five of them. Why don’t people use this enthusiasm at their workplace? *face palm*

I can totally relate to how scary it is to have someone write bad things about you when you did nothing wrong. Happened to me as well, deleted my previous blog due to that.

I had decided to never turn on commenting on this blog, coz people are crazy and I hate drama. But my sarcasm improved and so I turned on commenting. Anyone who messes with me gets a rant. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

          1. Exactly! I had no idea that I was offending that person. I was just taking my time to open up on a public platform. And the worst part is, that the person even told me to go and read those posts.😟
Oh! I am so sorry that you had to go through this. I hope that people learn to utilise their energy in something positive.😞
            Hahaha! You rock girl!😎
Show ’em how it’s done. Yaaasss queeeennn!πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

            1. That person really had the nerve to do that, huh? Crazy idiot he must have been. Don’t get paranoid about such freaks, they’re all over the place. Whenever you come across any of them, let me know, we’ll destroy them together! 😎😁 Hahaha no, no queen. We’re the powerpuff girls. We’ll drag a 3rd girl along to complete the gang. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰

              1. Exactly. Such people are all over the place.😌
Absolutely. We’ll troll the trolls. Give them a taste of their own medicine 😎
Hahaha! True! The power puff girls. I am bubbles ( the blue one… because favourite colour πŸ˜‚)
I have an idea. Let’s pull bharath along. Males haven’t been given equal chances. We should be the noble women and empower men by giving them a single spot in our group. We are so generous and open minded. 😌😌

                1. Exactly! Troll the trolls! Love that! 😎

I’ll be the green one, coz I don’t like pink.

Hahahaha I was gonna suggest the same thing, to add Bharath instead of a girl, but then I thought he’d delete his blog again, so let it be. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

So then Bharath will be pink. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜œ

                  1. Haha! Hell yeah 😎
Same pinch! Even I don’t like pink πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ
Hahaha! Very true! He loves to punch that delete button in it’s faceπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Damn! It’d be lovely. I wanna see how he’d look!🀣🀣

                    1. I agree, he’s awesome! Just like you! ☺️
I’m good, Gauri. How have you been?
No problem, I can completely understand that life gets in the way. WordPress can be a pain at times. I uninstall the app quite often. πŸ˜‚

                    2. Aww! Thank you so much! πŸ€—It’s means so much coming from such a lovely person like you πŸ˜ƒπŸ€—πŸ’•
I am so glad to hear that πŸ’› The past few days have been amazing, so I am really happy right now πŸ˜„
Haha! Very true! Life doesn’t just Stand in the way of blogging, it also makes sure that you run around like a headless chicken πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Ah! Delete the app, but please don’t get inspired by our dear friend bharath (here’s a secret, I call him Pingu 🀫)
Please don’t delete your blog πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

                    3. I’m so glad you’re happy right now. πŸ’›
Hehe so true. Life is life. πŸ™„
Hahaha Pingu, I like that! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I loved the cartoon Pingu! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Oh I’ve actually deleted many blogs in tha past, won’t be doing that for this one though. I won’t be like Pingu. πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ

  3. You, know, for some people her is like Facebook, they just go and like, because they want a like back😁i had people who even wrote comments without reading and when i asked a question from the content they unfollowed meπŸ˜‚, some people want likes, others followers and another part want to get real readers, yes i also dot follow people who dont follow me😁good points Ellen :)❀️

    1. Hahaha wow! Did that really happen? That was smart of you to cross-question them! πŸ˜‚
      Thanks for reading, Ilona! β˜ΊοΈπŸ’›

      1. Yes, reality sometimes can be really strange😁also many times someone follow me and when i follow back they unfollow me, so they want to have followers, but they dont really want to follow you😁, happened to you?

        1. That’s happened to me on Instagram. I used to use these apps to track followers coz many did exactly that – they followed and then unfollowed when I followed them back. They were so irritating.

How do you understand that they do that on WordPress? Is there an app?

          1. imagine yesterday you had like 550 today you have 545 so i go thru all the list to see who follows me and after i check who i m following, i dont follow people who dont follow me so it is easy to understand what’s happening😁

            1. Ohh.. But you have a huge following. So that whole exercise would take a lot of time, right?
I stopped bothering now, you know why? Because many who follow me never really like my posts. It’s just a fake follow so that I follow them back. Crazy people here. 😁

                  1. Oh yes, felt good, to unfollow, payback, like you said, taste your own medicineπŸ˜‚but now i will stop, because really takes entire life to check who unfollowed πŸ™‚

                1. Yeah.. Don’t bother about haters.. They may get a huge following or many likes, but what matters most is how much you help people with your content. That is the only thing that matters in the end. ☺️
I always said this, that I admire the fact that you write in English even though it’s not your native language. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’›

                    1. Wow do I look so young? That’s a huge compliment. 😁
I’ve to still learn how to knit. πŸ˜‚ What about you? πŸ˜‰

                    2. I dont know how do you look in real life, but on the pictures you look maximum20, well i was never good at knitting, we had lessons in high school, but somehow i haven’t learned, i guess it was to early😁 it will come, it will comeπŸ˜‚

                    3. I look the same in pictures and in read life. I don’t put make up, so I’m the same. πŸ˜πŸ™ˆ
Hahaha we had other types of stitching in school, not knitting. We’ll go for class together when the time comes. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  4. I don’t have time to read much but I’m glad I saw this today. Thanks for writing.
I do feel sorry for any new bloggers who then feel they are getting an engaged reader when it’s probably just someone taking advantage of their naivety. Knowing that new blogger will follow them back.
The thing that bothers me is the whole follow for follow thing tbh.
For example. I have around 400 readers. If I followed all those back and they wrote the same post lengths as myself (say 3mins average) that’s 1,200mins or 20hrs! Who has 20hrs just to read other people’s work! I’m a working, single dad, who struggles to get posts written. Reading anything is a luxury.
By your example if the person has 2,000 followers and reads all their followers work that’s 4 days worth of reading.
There is a certain degree of bullshit on here. These days I ignore it as much as possible.
Anyways, good on you for posting. At least your posts are unique and interesting.
Hope you are keeping well πŸ™‚

    1. Hahaha I totally agree, CJ. Even though I follow everyone who follows me, I only read posts which I find interesting. I don’t have time to read all posts either. 😁
I’ve written about it before, that out of the people following me, only 20% ‘like’ my posts, and out of them only 10% actually read them.

But I don’t see the point of the fake ‘likes’. Either read the post or don’t ‘like’ it at all.

I feel that blogging should be more about sharing and helping others or making them laugh, than wanting to increase the number of your followers and getting ‘likes’.
Thanks for reading. I really appreciate your comment. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’›

      1. My pleasure ❀ I actually read you post about diet and I couldn't comment , I think the sectiion comment is deleted?Anyway I was wondering , since I am on diet too : what do you think of a diet based on oat and smoothies ans vegies ?? what advice do you have to give me ? have a great day Ellen ❀

        1. Yeah the comment section was off all that time. I only started it a few months ago. πŸ™ˆ

I actually eat a lot of protein to keep myself full, which includes cottage cheese, chicken and eggs. I don’t think I’d be able to stick to a completely vegetarian diet. I do eat my veggies though.

When you’re deciding on a diet, try choosing one which you can stick to for your entire life. That’s the key.
I’ve been doing Intermittent Fasting for a year now, and I kept at it because it helps me a lot and its not very difficult.
In the end, do whatever works for your body.
The Mediterranean diet is said to be the healthiest diet out there, and like you said, it includes a lot of veggies, nuts and fish. ☺️ I hope this helps. πŸ˜πŸ™ˆ

          1. Emm , actually , I was practicing sport regulary and I wasn’t depriving myself of food but no junk food allowed, I kept doing sport for like one year ,but I Stopped working out since January , and I regain weight quickly !! So that’s why I want to manage for myself a healthy equilibrate diet with a little bit of work-out and for a long or life time ! I appreciate your answer and I will try to take work with your advices , thank you so much ❀

            1. Ohh I see. Yes it isn’t good to deprive yourself of food. Try eating according to your calorie needs (you can find out the same with an online calorie calculator, or you can use MyFitnessPal appy). It’s good that you quit junk food, that is one of the main ways to lose weight. I wish you the best of luck for your weight loss journey. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’›

  5. I agree, yes. This is not actually very kind I think, the person is selfish. I admit doing that but then after liking three to four posts, I used to read them actually and see if I shouldn comment πŸ˜‚ I love to read these. Post these oftenπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    1. Hehe yeah I used to do the same before, ‘like’ and then read them later. πŸ˜‚
Thank you, Ramyani. I’m so glad you like reading them. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’›

  6. Like you I wish there was a way to mark all notifications as readπŸ™„
People don’t realise that followers mean nothing, it takes lot of effort to keep them engaged!

  7. Ha ha so true and relatable. When I started blogging I used to be thrilled to see so many likes and achievement notifications! Same with instagrammers. Some of them like a series of posts on a day and wait for us to follow their profile. Once we follow, they unfollow :@ Took me a little while to realized all they want is more number of likes and followers and not true readers. Great post! Glad you brought these up πŸ™‚

    1. I faced the exact same thing on Instagram too. I used an unfollower app for Instagram, it showed all the people who unfollowed me, so I would unfollowed them back. Hahaha. πŸ˜€
Thank you for stopping by. πŸ™‚

    1. Well, then there is no difference between Instagram and WordPress.
On Instagram people like posts without reading, which is understandable because it’s an app for pictures.
But WordPress is a writing platform, so getting random likes where people haven’t read a single post isn’t really flattering.
Anyway, that’s my view. Thanks for commenting. ☺️
